Ireland Summer of 1920
Father John wanted to keep his village of Cafgarven free from trouble but the surrounding countryside was in the grip of a rebellion against Great Britain’s Crown forces. He found himself caught up in the horrid conflict of tit-for-tat murder when two individuals from either side of the struggle came to him for help. One was a Fenian rebel from a decimated flying column; the other was a young English Black and Tan.

Ireland in the 1920s was a land riddled with the mistrust, anger, fear, and confusion of an undeclared civil war. The Irish Volunteers hoped to rally supporters for their fight for freedom from British rule. The Black and Tan police force, consisting of many war-scarred unemployed soldiers, was put together by the British government to quell this Irish rebellion. In a war that would never be declared a war, the Volunteers orchestrate crimes that will knowingly bring down the wrath of the heavy-handed Black and Tans... all in the name of freedom. Powell's story of unlikely alliances between friend and foe, religion and superstition, and heaven and hell bring to light the moral quests that beset a war-torn country. This tale starts off somewhat slow and a little confusing for a reader unfamiliar with the use of Black and Tans in the story (no, it's not a combination of beers); but, as you read, it becomes a compelling, rather addictive storyline. The development of so many central characters- Henry, Sean, Father John, Freda, plus so many other minor characters- is accomplished fluidly and profoundly, creating characters that are not only likeable but easy-to-identify-with. This book would be appropriate for high school students and up. It is an extraordinary study of the actual impact of war on the human psyche and the madness of crowds in the disguise of a compelling novel. But then, it is also an intriguing provocation of self-exploration and our own moral compasses. As Powell writes, "We are conditioned to kill at other men's bidding. Wrapped in comradeship and blighted by the guilt of letting your friends down." Furthermore: "It's strange how people can be organized into colossal weapons of hate." It was a wonderful choice to read this novel. My best wishes to the author for a job well-done, and my positive recommendation to potential readers!Product details

The Black and Tan Summer edition by CA Powell Gisela Pizzatto Dick Hill Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love a good page turner set against an historic background - this book is a good mix of action, adventure, politics of the time and religion! Overall it is a good read and gets across the message that the human spirit can triumph over adversity, no matter what.
It gives a good insight into the English and Irish conflict at the time. For those who like reading a good story with some military history thrown in, then this is for you.
No matter how people change or try to do good in the world, it turns out badly. While there is some truth to this, I still kept hoping that at least even one person would have had some chance to wind up happy in the end. Not so in this book though.
In this novel, the author brings to vivid life Ireland in the time of the Revolution. He does so primarily through the lives of two men on opposite sides of the bitter conflict, and the optimistic, slightly naive priest who finds himself caught in the middle. This book will be of interest to fans of historical fiction, Ireland, and great writing.
This story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. This absorbing and attention-grabbing work had me engaged from the beginning. The story flows from scene to scene effortlessly, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling.
Set in 1920s Ireland, this is a wonderfully written story vividly capturing those turbulent times. For those unfamiliar with this part of Ireland's history, the Black and Tans were men from Great Britain who joined the Royal Irish Constabulary as Temporary Constables during the Irish War of Independence. Their role was to help maintain order and fight the Irish Republican Army. However, they left an infamous trail of destruction behind them by brutally attacking the civilian population and their property.
Although, this isn't a history book, this novel brilliantly captures the atmosphere of the time period. It's a well written and interesting story that I would highly recommend.
This author has talent beyond words. I don't typically read novels, but C.A. Powell delivered this to me with an amazing flare. His use of words to describe well were simply magic. I was captured by his simple but yet charming style of writing. I promise if you have a favorite chair in the home this is the book that should keep you company. Take a journey with The Black and Tan Summer and I promise you too will be pleased! The Black and Tan Police Force were in my opinion a group of thugs that were hell bent on pressing back on the Ireland natives who were rather determined to unravel thier constant opression by the Brits. Be prepared for a long ride as this book is very thorough from the onset. Since the story was a bit unfamiliar to me I had to really take my time in the early chapters. The period of time was set in the early 20's in Ireland and dealt with the plight of citizens desiring some freedoms. This book does have the making of a classic for it has a theme every human being can identify with, and that's the love and desire of "freedom"!
